whales

When a whale launches itself out of the water there's no denying its power. The huge breach upwards and the crash back into the ocean is a gravity defying statement...
Time stands still.

When a whale chooses to try its acrobatics near me the water vibrates for hundreds of metres, sending tremors through the hull of my small boat and leaving me shaken but awestruck.
Every chance I get to photograph these creatures I am humbled by them. Yet they remain so vulnerable, at the constant mercy of a tug of war between those nations intent on whaling and those trying to protect them.

It's reassuring to watch the numbers of whales cruising past Byron Bay increase every year, as new friends join old friends on their annual migration.
